CMU Scientist Discovers Amynthas sirindhornae, a New Earthworm Species Near the Mekong River in Chiang Rai
A scientist from Chiang Mai University’s Faculty of Science has achieved a significant breakthrough at both national and international levels with the discovery of a new earthworm species, Amynthas sirindhornae, found along the Mekong River in Wiang Kaen District, Chiang Rai Province. This discovery represents a major milestone for the Thai research community and underscores Chiang Mai University’s active role in advancing biodiversity research.
The discovery of Amynthas sirindhornae was led by Assistant Professor Dr. Nattawadee Nantarat from the Department of Biology, Faculty of Science, Chiang Mai University, in collaboration with researchers from Chulalongkorn University and other institutions. Through detailed taxonomic and genetic investigations of Mekong giant earthworms, the research not only resulted in the identification of a new species but also highlighted the ecological significance of the Mekong River ecosystem, which requires collaborative conservation efforts from all sectors.
The discovery was officially announced at the 36th Chula the Impact event, themed
“43 New Species to the World,” held on December 25, 2025, at Chulalongkorn University. Associate Professor Dr. Piyapong Niamsup, Dean of the Faculty of Science, represented Chiang Mai University at the event. The exhibition showcased 43 newly discovered species, each bearing scientific names honoring Her Royal Highness Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn on the auspicious occasion of her 70th birthday anniversary in 2025. The event also served as an important platform for disseminating knowledge on taxonomy and biodiversity to the public.
This landmark achievement underscores the strength of Thai researchers and inter-institutional collaboration, as well as Chiang Mai University’s vital role in biodiversity research and species discovery, contributing to the sustainable conservation of the Mekong ecosystem.
